Shake It Out Body Cards: movement-based regulation for kids 3+

When a child’s feelings get big, talking about them often has to wait. The body needs somewhere to put that energy first. Shake It Out Body Cards give children a simple routine they can learn quickly: move it, then rest. Shaking, stomping, and pushing help big-feeling energy move through the body. Slow, rocking, and heavy moves help it settle.

Each card names one move in kid-friendly language, with a friendly illustration and an alternative way to do it. Kids can shake like a wet dog, stomp like a dinosaur, push the wall, wobble like jelly, hum like a bee, or wrap up in a cozy blanket. Every card also offers a seated, quiet, or no-touch way to do the move, so children with different bodies, abilities, sensory needs, and spaces can take part without being singled out.

Ways to use them in your work:
  • Open a session with a move of the day to shift energy and build rapport
  • Use them in the moment, when a child is escalated and not ready for words
  • Run a family shake break, where caregiver and child practice together and build co-regulation
  • Send cards home with a weekly tracker to carry skills between sessions
  • Teach a stuffy, where the child shows a stuffed animal how, building mastery and confidence

Built on trauma-informed principles:
  • Choice and control stay with the child (“Your body, your choice”)
  • Every move has a gentler alternative
  • Movement is framed as a way to feel better, never as a consequence
  • Each move ends with rest and noticing, which builds interoceptive awareness
A note for caregivers, included on the cards, explains in plain language why movement helps and how to keep it playful, which makes the deck easy to hand off for home practice.

What’s included:
  • 12 illustrated movement cards, each with a seated or quiet option
  • A cover card, how-to-play cards, and a grown-ups card
  • A printable weekly tracker: “My shake it out week”

Part of the Emotion Regulation and Big Feelings collection from Seen and Known: Healing on a Continuum. Our clinical tools are trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and made by a clinician for clinicians.

For use by licensed or pre-licensed mental health professionals and supervised trainees within their scope of practice. Purchase includes a license for use in your own clinical practice.
