Unhook: anxiety and overthinking cards for teens and adults

Anxious clients rarely need more information about anxiety. They need something to do with it in the moment. Unhook gives you four ways in, one per suit, so you can match the tool to where your client is right now.

Check it (CBT)

Questions that test a worry thought against the evidence, such as “What is the evidence for this thought? What is the evidence against it?” and “Is this a problem I can solve now, or a what-if?” The suit also includes a check for whether a worry is an accurate read of something real. That matters when clients’ fears are grounded in real circumstances, and it keeps the work honest rather than dismissive.

Unhook (ACT)

Defusion lines that help clients step back from thoughts that keep looping, so they can notice a thought without arguing with it or obeying it.

Settle

Quick, practical ways to calm the body alarm, from a long exhale to humming. Not every client finds breathing helpful, so the deck notes that breathing cards can be skipped. Grounding and movement cards work well instead.

Move toward

Prompts that point clients toward what matters, even with anxiety along for the ride.

Ways to use it in your work:

  • In session: spread out one suit and let your client choose what fits today, setting aside what doesn’t
  • In the moment: settle first, then check it or unhook, then move toward what matters
  • As homework: a card of the day, drawn each morning and practiced once
  • In the client’s own words: four write-your-own cards for lines in their language or phrasing

Why clinicians like it:

  • Integrates CBT, ACT, and body-based regulation without making clients choose a model
  • Gives teens and adults something concrete to hold, which helps with clients who struggle to engage in talk alone
  • Validates real concerns instead of treating every worry as a distortion
  • Easy to hand off for between-session practice

What’s included:

  • 36 cards in four color-coded suits, plus 4 write-your-own cards
  • A cover card and how-to-use cards covering the suits, ways to use them, and a pacing note

Part of the Anxiety and Overthinking collection from Seen and Known: Healing on a Continuum. Our clinical tools are trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and made by a clinician for clinicians.

For use by licensed or pre-licensed mental health professionals and supervised trainees within their scope of practice. Purchase includes a license for use in your own clinical practice.
